What your payment recipients see and why it matters
Instant Pay Upgrade is a recipient-selected payment experience that allows payments to be delivered within minutes, even on nights, weekends, and holidays.
This article explains what Instant Pay Upgrade is, why payees value it, and how it benefits your vendor relationships, without changing your payment workflow.
What is Instant Pay Upgrade?
Today’s freelancers and payees expect payment flexibility, transparency, and control.
Instant Pay Upgrade allows:
- Recipients to receive funds instantly, even on nights, weekends, and holidays
- Platforms to maintain standard payout timelines
- Payment costs to be shifted to the recipient when speed is requested
If Instant Pay isn’t available or isn’t selected, the payment is delivered using the selected ACH speed. When Instant Pay is selected and paid for by the vendor, the upgrade will appear in the “Messages and history” section of a payable.
It’s a modern payment experience that strengthens vendor relationships, without adding work for your team.
What your payees experience
When payees receive a payment notification email, they'll see an option to access funds instantly.
If a payee chooses to get paid instantly:
- Payments arrive within minutes
- Any applicable fee for speed is deducted from the payment by the recipient
- In rare cases, delivery may take up to 30 minutes depending on their bank
What this means for you as a payer
Instant Pay Upgrade does not change:
- How you initiate payments
- Your approval workflows
- Your funding method or payment timing
- Your fees or costs
The decision to use Instant Pay is made by the recipient, and any applicable fee is deducted from their payment.
You may notice that a recipient upgraded to Instant Pay when:
- Reviewing payment details
- Viewing a payment confirmation
- Responding to vendor questions about timing or fees
Fees
Instant Pay charges a 1.75% fee per transfer, with:
- Minimum: $1.00 USD
- Maximum: $50.00 USD
The fee for speed is deducted from the payment by the recipient at the time of transfer.
Why payees value payment speed flexibility
Many businesses, contractors, and service providers value faster access to funds. Providing this option improves payee satisfaction and reduces payment timing questions.
Instant Pay helps:
- Improve cash flow predictability
- Cover short-term expenses without waiting days for settlement
- Avoid reliance on credit cards or short-term financing
- Feel more confident and in control of how they get paid
For many people, simply having the option to get paid instantly, even if they don’t use it every time, meaningfully improves their experience.
Impact on satisfaction and retention
Offering Instant Pay can positively affect your vendor relationships:
- Higher satisfaction: Workers appreciate flexibility and faster access to funds
- Fewer payment-timing questions: Clear expectations reduce follow-ups and support requests
- Stronger trust: People feel respected when given control over payment speed
- Improved retention: Payees are more likely to continue working with payers that offer modern, flexible payment options
In practice, clients with Instant Pay options often see higher vendor engagement and fewer payment-related issues, with no operational change on their side.
What Instant Pay Upgrade is not
Instant Pay Upgrade does not mean:
- Vendors are paid early at your expense
- Payments bypass approvals or compliance checks
- Funds are reversible once delivered
- Your accounting or reconciliation changes
It’s simply an optional delivery speed chosen by the vendor after a payment is initiated.
